It's easy to do but SO important!
All MDF bases should be sealed prior to tiling. MDF (medium density fiberboard) is a very dense wood composite that isn't subject to warping but why take a chance when you spend so much money on your mosaic tiles?
One glue that is popular is "Weldbond." It's a white glue that dries clear. Dilute the Weldbond using this ratio...5 parts water to 1 part Weldbond. Brush onto your MDF base, including all sides, corners and I even suggest doing this on the back. This gives an even tension to your MDF base.
Sealing is not the most exciting thing in the world but it only takes minutes to dry and you can tile away with confidence that your MDF base will not absorb any liquids when you grout and most certainly will not warp.
If you don't have any Weldbond on hand you can use any good glue. Carpenters Wood Glue is another good choice.
Happy tiling!
Thanks for this tip. I hadn't worked with MDF bases before and did not realize they should be sealed. I'm hoping I did mine right. (The mix.)

Hi Kay,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the award!!!
Actually, I sealed the MDF before I sent it to the winners :) I couldn't fit enough glue in the packages to do everything.
Have a great evening and I look forward to seeing the finished project!
